The iconic landscape of the Acadia/DownEast region features the rocky Maine coast with its islands and inlets and the hiker’s paradise known as Acadia National Park, located on Mount Desert Island. First, an explanation of the moniker “DownEast”: sailors navigational directions, coming from New York and Boston to this area were to sail downwind and east.
Mainetourism.com describes Acadia, and Mount Desert Island, on which it is located, like this:
“Formed by powerful glaciers over thousands of years, Acadia National Park is a getaway in and of itself. Spread over 46,000 acres and several towns and villages, the park features many miles of shoreline to explore, 125 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of carriage roads. No matter the season, Acadia is a recreational treasure-trove. In the winter, enjoy ice fishing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and more. The warmer months bring traditional hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, ranger-guided adventures, and other sun-inspired activities.” Bar Harbor, while touristy, is the premiere village destination on MDI, but Seal Harbor, Northeast Harbor and some of the other smaller villages offer incredible vistas and photo opportunities. You will also find a huge variety of wildlife here, much of which is not found elsewhere in Maine. And don’t miss Eastport’s ocean whirlpool–the biggest in the Western Hemisphere.
Back on the mainland, the rest of the DownEast region is still a maritime paradise. With water views from many places, it appeals to people who want easy access to the ocean. A mecca for artists and craftspeople, there is still room for appreciating the history of the area and many opportunities for antiquing. Villages like Blue Hill and Castine are considered the among the most picturesque anywhere and will remind you of the quaintest Maine villages people imagine. Living in Acadia/DownEast is ideal for people who love to hike but value being on the ocean at the same time. A town/village lifestyle is what you will find here with a fairly sophisticated and diverse population. That said, be prepared for the influx of tourists every summer!
