Lifestyle
The focal point of the Kennebec River Valley is, fittingly, the Kennebec River. With world-class white water rafting, (especially in Skowhegan and The Forks), to the recently developed Augusta waterfront, to the well-respected Colby College in Waterville, the river is the focus. One of the unique features of this region is that it offers a variety of communities: the larger towns like Augusta, the capitol, hosts all the modern conveniences and the economic/employment advantages of a government center that is also home to tech companies.
However, if you are more of a “small village” person, there are plenty of those in the area, too, many with quaint main streets and town centers. Finally, if you prefer to be a little more off the beaten track, yet still fairly close to shopping, dining and services, you are in luck. With a population of around 70,000, this region is able to support several hospitals, solid dining options and cultural activities (nod to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture).
The gorges are beautiful and there are plenty of hiking trails as well as river-focused activities. Besides the river, be sure to investigate Belgrade Lakes, a string of seven freshwater lakes, is located in this region. There are also some craft breweries and pick-your-own orchards nearby as well as little antique spots dotted throughout the landscape (especially in Hallowell). In the summer, you’ll find farmer’s markets and summer theater, too! Winter means it’s time to head to the hundreds of ATV/snowmobiling trails. So whether you want to hike, canoe, fish, kayak, snowmobile, hike or rock climb, the Kennebec River Valley is well-suited to people who love the outdoors but are also interested in other activities including cultural opportunities as well as access to small cities and towns/villages.
Annual events include
Blistered Fingers Family Bluegrass Festival
Kneading Conference (for bread enthusiasts, not masseurs/masseuses)
Largest towns and cities
