Lifestyle
The southernmost point of Maine is known as The Beaches. Beach activities are not confined to swimming (and there are water parks nearby with slides and all the other trappings)—you can sail, go whale watching, kayak or go fishing, too. If you are a lighthouse lover, there are lots to see here. If you are looking for non-beach activities, there are golf courses, theater, shopping antiquing and major outlet shopping at Kittery Trading Post. Lots of good dining options and plenty of inns, hotels and other lodging abounds.
This area, comprised of towns like Kennebunkport (made famous by the Bush family) boasts many estates and pricey properties, though there are absolutely more modest homes available. With more than 30 miles of beachfront, there is a community here to fit every lifestyle. Ogunquit is kind of artsy, while Old Orchard Beach is a family magnet with an amusement park and lots of other family-friendly activities. The Beach region is beautiful with ocean views and the vibe of being on vacation. It is almost unrecognizable from the desolate, heavily forested regions in the north and doesn’t feature large lakes found more in the middle and western portions of the state. The Beaches will suit those who love the beach and want the convenience of having shopping, activities, dining and entertainment very nearby in a somewhat upscale environment. It is also appealing to those who appreciate easy travel access to Boston, New York and other areas to the south. This area is a big tourist draw, so consider that reality when deciding whether it’s a good fit for you—lots to do and no shortage of amenities, but lots of tourists in the summer and the traffic/lines that go with them.
