Lifestyle
As is true of most of the other regions of Maine, the Highlands area draws people who love the outdoors. Here, the focus is on the largest lake in Maine, Moosehead Lake, which supports lots of different water activities as well as unequaled wildlife viewing opportunities (from moose to waterfowl and beyond). The Highlands region also houses the Penobscot River, the longest in Maine. There are streams and ponds as well, perfect for floating down, fishing on or just gazing at. The other major outdoor attraction is Baxter State Park which boasts the highest mountains in Maine, including Katahdin, which is the pinnacle of the Appalachian Trail. This part of Maine is steeped in logging history and you can follow old logging roads for hiking or taking a drive. There are plenty of snow-related things to do as well.
While Baxter State Park is enormous and feels as far removed as possible from “civilization”, the Highlands does, indeed, contain several cities and towns. Bangor, originally a timber town, has enjoyed a revitalization recently and is filled with galleries, interesting restaurants and cultural and craft offerings. Orono is the home of the University of Maine’s main campus and is everything you’d want in a college town. The towns of Greenville and Millinocket are well-located as gateways to Moosehead Lake (the former) and to Baxter State Park (the latter). The Highlands is the right spot for people who like to climb mountains, enjoy lakes and ponds and are looking for a somewhat simpler way of life, but might want access to a college town and/or a vibrant city like Bangor.
