Lifestyle
This western-most section of Maine is beloved by downhill skiers, hikers, bikers and those who appreciate enormous glacial lakes, like Sebago Flagstaff and Rangely. Closer to Portland, this area is a little bit more accessible than some of the other regions of Maine favored by outdoor enthusiasts. Sugarloaf, Sunday River (also home to the North American Wife Carrying Championship) and Saddleback, among others, cater to the snowboarding and skiing crowd.
You will also find small cities, charming villages, several small museums housing hyper-specific collections and lots of artisans making hand-crafted items.
Lewiston-Auburn, comprised of roughly 60,000 residents, is the cultural and economic center of this region. With theaters, Bates College, Artwalk and Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary, the twin cities are a destination of their own. They also host many annual events. Smaller towns, like Bethel, are quintessential Maine villages with their town greens, neighborly disposition and small-town feel. Fryeburg, right on the NH border, is home to the singular Fryeburg Fair which includes the pig scramble, Woodsmen field day and skillet throwing contest. Naples is at the southern tip of the Lakes and Mountains region and is a lovely town with less of a rural feel. At the other end of the spectrum, Rangeley Lakes is all about being in the wilderness—this area of Maine truly offers something for everyone. Lots of “good, clean fun” in the form of festivals and events, plenty of trails, mountains and waterways for whatever kind of outdoor activities you enjoy, and lots of towns and cities providing art, culture and dining opportunities.
Annual events include
Town of Gray’s Blueberry Festival
Riverwalk Blues and Brews Festival
Largest towns and cities
Jay, Livermore & Livermore Falls
Kingfield & Carrabassett Valley
