Aroostook County, affectionately known just as “The County” to locals, The northernmost region of Maine, it borders Canada and its culture (including the food!) is significantly influenced by its French-Acadian roots. Heavily forested, with lots of farmland, Aroostook County is also a mecca for the water-lover: The Allagash Wilderness Waterway, St. John River and over 2,000 lakes, streams and ponds should satisfy all but those looking for an ocean experience. It’s ideal for those who value solitude and don’t mind being removed from the hustle and bustle.
Primary activities include biking, hiking (both trails and smaller mountains), camping and birdwatching. With over 2,300 snowmobile trails in and around Caribou, the epicenter of winter fun, The County is a wonderful destination for people who love to ski, snowshoe, ice fish and otherwise take advantage of the outdoors in cooler temperatures. There are some unique attractions as well, including the world’s largest scale model of the solar system, which stretches for 40 miles. The sun is located inside a building at the University of Maine’s Presque Isle campus. If you are looking for a bustling small town experience, Houlton, with its Victorian architecture and Market Square Historic District is a gem.
